As lawyers, we are called upon to help clients navigate disputes and advise them about legal rules and procedures that relate to the problem they are facing. In order to perform any of those functions effectively, we need a clear understanding of the state of the law.

Legal research is fundamentally important to what we do as lawyers. It shapes how legal problems are understood, analyzed, and resolved. Proper research informs our ability to be competent practitioners and meet ethical obligations to our clients and to the court.

This course will review how to effectively conduct legal research and apply it to the legal problem-solving process. It will take approximately 2 hours to complete.

This course relates to legal practice, which is one of the domains in the Law Society of Alberta’s Professional Development Profile for Alberta Lawyers.
