Dan’s parents immigrated to Canada from El Salvador in the middle of January, and we’re glad they decided to stay – despite being welcomed to Edmonton with all the snow and cold that accompanies a winter on the Canadian prairies! If they hadn’t stayed, LESA wouldn’t have the good fortune of having Dan as our Director of Integration. Dan’s ability to see the forest and the trees, approach issues from a process-improvement standpoint, and connect the organization’s day-to-day actions with our long-term strategic goals make him an excellent leader.
Dan started off his career at Canadian Tire, and within 3 years he had ascended to the position of Store Manager. He then broadened his horizons as Operations Manager for Edmonton Construction Association before going on to work for a year with Public Works and Government Services Canada. In 2011, Dan was welcomed on to the LESA team. He started working with our educational resources, and over time his role morphed into what it is today. With his previous work experience and educational background (including a Diploma in Business Management from NAIT and a certification in Project Management), Dan was well poised to step into his current position.
As the Director of Integration, Dan is responsible for the efficient and effective management of (a) human, financial, physical, technological, and knowledge-based resources (including governance and administration support); and (b) social capital through branding, communications, and community engagement initiatives (including customer/student service). While no 2 days are ever alike for Dan, the diverse range of projects – from financial and HR to IT and communications – is one of the things he loves best about his job. He also enjoys working with all of the incredible people who help shape our organization: our valuable volunteers, trusted contractors, and exceptional employees.
Some of Dan’s favorite memories with LESA include going to the horse races for a year-end event and volunteering at the Food Bank over the holidays. When he’s not in the office, he enjoys spending time with his family – especially his wife and two young children – and plans his life around watching his favorite sports team – FC Barcelona – hit the field. He also makes mean pancakes from scratch, or so he says. We’re still waiting for him to bring breakfast to the office one day to prove it.
