Assessment officers derive their authority solely from the Rules of Court. An understanding of their authority and its limits is a prerequisite to successfully advancing or challenging cost claims. Examine relevant rules and judicial authorities that have interpreted or affected the application of some of these rules. Facilitate the resolution of costs issues, guide counsel in the preparation of submissions for costs assessments, and suggest arguments that might otherwise be overlooked.
