May 17th is the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia. This day is dedicated to celebrating and recognizing the LGBTQIA+ community, while also recognizing the challenges, adversity, and barriers they continue to face.
In recent years there have been significant advances in policies protecting the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. Several countries have legalized marriage equality and have also decriminalized LGBTQIA+ sexuality. Unfortunately, LGBTQIA+ people continue to face stigma and discrimination across the world. In some parts of the world, LGBTQIA+ people still face the death penalty for their identity, leaving them vulnerable to human rights violations and abuses.
Given the current global political climate, it is important to unite in support of the LGBTQIA+ community more than ever. We dedicate this day to recognizing the hard-earned progress we have made, while also addressing our ongoing goal to advance equality.
