Practice Foundations: Adult Guardianships and Trusteeships (Edmonton)

More and more, people are losing capacity without doing estate planning, precipitating the need for guardianship and trusteeship for their affairs to be managed. Further, the rise in young adults who require extra help, but not full guardianship and trusteeship, has led to an increase in supported decision-making as the Act allows for more dignity to the adult who may not have full capacity. This program will explore foundational topics designed to support practitioners who want to start doing AGTA work or who want to revisit the basics.

Topics include:

• Desk Applications: Learn how to prepare and package your application for seamless appointments
• Applications by Hearing: Understand the difference between hearings and desk applications and when to proceed to court
• Urgent Applications: Understand what factors are required and the process for how to get an urgent matter dealt with
• Accounting Applications: Consider best practices for providing accounts and what to look for when requesting accounting
• Capacity Issues: Delve into the potential issues surrounding capacity and how capacity interplays with guardianship and trusteeship
