Review major updates to administrative law. Presentations include:

Summary of Vavilov | David Phillip Jones QC, de Villars Jones LLP

  • Discuss the major changes made by Vavilov to standards of review for both appeals and applications for judicial review. Identify areas which Vavilov does not deal with.

Internal Administrative Appeals | Justice Frans F. Slatter, Court of Appeal of Alberta

  • Examine the standard of review that should be applied by an administrative appeal tribunal when it is hearing an appeal from a tribunal of first instance. To what extent should the appeal tribunal extend deference? Does Vavilov apply?
Please note, this presentation was prepared by Justice Slatter and presented by David Phillip Jones QC

Doré After Vavilov | Brynne Harding, Bennett Jones LLP

  • The judicial review of administrative decisions engaging Charter protections, post-Vavilov.

Standing | Katie Slipp, Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP

  • Discuss the evolution of and recent developments related to standing before administrative tribunals and courts, including public interest standing.

The “Record” | Jeneane Grundberg QC, Brownlee LLP

  • Review the record in both judicial reviews and statutory appeals. Identify which documents should be referenced, when affidavits are admissible, who has the onus respecting admissibility, when should the record be filed, and practical pointers for preparing the record.
