    Investigate the law of search and seizure. Discuss principles and leading cases relevant to this rapidly-changing area of criminal law. Examine the implications of the Charter, recent case law, and a wide variety of relevant, practical topics that consider the exclusion of evidence. This on-demand program was originally presented as an in-person program in June 2018. Total running time is 4 hours, 30 minutes.
  • The Current Law Governing the Search of Electronic Devices at the Canadian Border (On-Demand)

    In this presentation, Kent Teskey QC discusses border searches under s 99 of the Customs Act, with a particular emphasis on searches of electronic devices. He highlights current case law and Canada Border Services Agency policies. He also provides suggestions for how to best advise clients with respect to border searches. This on-demand program was originally presented as an in-person program in June 2018.
  • Practice Foundations: Cross-Examinations (On-Demand)

    Understanding and mastering the art of cross-examination is critical in any trial setting. This program addresses foundational theory and explore practical applications. Topics include: the theory of cross-examination within the adversarial advocacy system, effective planning and preparation for cross-examination, cross-examination of sexual offence complainants and vulnerable witnesses, impeachment, and dealing with difficult witnesses. Faculty includes experienced counsel who practice in the areas of civil litigation, criminal law, and family law, along with members of the judiciary. These on-demand programs were originally presented on March 5, 2024. The total running time for each presentation ranges between 36 minutes and 1 hour, 5 minutes.

    Understanding and mastering the art of cross-examination is critical in any trial setting. From the perspective of experienced counsel, this roundtable discussion explores topics of interest to litigators in their early years of practice including advice the panelists would give to themselves if they could go back to their early years of practice, common mistakes they see counsel make in cross-examination, and how they organize their cross-examination materials.   • The Current Law Governing the Search of Electronic Devices at the Canadian Border

    This paper provides a comprehensive review of the law governing the search of electronic devices at the Canadian border. It highlights the applicable legislation and case law, as well as the current Canada Border Services Agency policy. It also discusses the existing debate regarding the constitutionality of suspicion-less searches of electronic devices at the border, and the challenge of rapidly changing technologies. In addition, the paper highlights practical implications for clients travelling with electronic devices. This paper is part of a collection presented at LESA’s Search and Seizure program in Calgary on June 2, 2018 and in Edmonton on June 9, 2018.
