This paper actually includes four papers in one. The first paper, “Finding Legislation”, provides a detailed overview of how legislation comes to be and outlines the process for finding legislation. The second paper, “Noting Up”, provides an overview of how to note up legislation and case law for currency and relevance. It includes a point-form overview of the research process. The third paper, “Law Making and Our Courts”, reviews how the courts operate as lawmakers, the concepts of jurisdiction and authority, how to find and locate case law, and provides an introduction to legal citation. The fourth paper, “They Have Questions; You’ll Have Answers”, offers an outline of online resources that may be used to provide the answer to many basic legal research questions, primarily focusing on finding primary sources, such as legislation and case law, online.
These papers are part of a collection presented at LESA’s 2015 Research for Legal Support Staff program.
